Fort Vechten was built in 1870 as part of the second ring of fortresses around the city of Utrecht. It numbers as many as 16 bomb-proof, earth-covered buildings, incorporating 16 million bricks. The large reduit building with its cast-iron Gothic Revival staircase served as a last resort. In 1881, the fort was expanded with bomb-proof barracks. The fort’s guns covered the Houten Plain and the Arnhem-Utrecht railway line. The trenches and reinforced concrete shelters were added during the mobilisation of 1914–1918. In 1939–1940, three cast-steel machine-gun casemates were built on top of the fort’s front wall.
